From colourful cartoon characters to advertising campaigns and logo designs, Hairyhand Creative Agency has a diverse and engaging portfolio of artwork. Ashford Borough Council has worked with Hairyhand on several projects including event branding for Ashford’s annual Create Music Festival and pavement games and signage for the council’s recent smoke free play area initiative.
We caught up Creative Director Scott Randall to find out more about the man behind the Hairyhand …
Firstly, let’s get a little bit of background on the name Hairyhand, as it’s not a name you come across every day. Scott explained that once he graduated and achieved his qualifications, he started working for a design firm in Canterbury.
In terms of the design work I had to do, there wasn’t a lot of room for creativity.
As he was looking for something to make his CV stand out to future employers, he needed a different approach.
It got me thinking, as it’s approaching Halloween, I could get myself some wolf-like hairy hands.
Applying for jobs with a hairy hand turned out to be not such a wild idea after all, as many companies were intrigued and fascinated by it.
How long have you been a designer? Have you always wanted to pursue this career?
I’ve been working as a designer for nearly 16 years, but to be honest, I didn’t have a clear career path when I was younger. I did art at GCSE and Fine Art at A Level. I wasn’t sure what to do after that. Art-related subjects seemed like the obvious choice, so I went on the study at KIAD and Farnham University and got my BA in Visual Communications.
What is ‘design’ to you?
Design is a mysterious, creative process. If there are too many boundaries or rules, you can’t be creative. There needs to be some form of chaos and havoc to bring on an element of creativity. Design needs to be engaging so the reader understands it.
When you’re working on a project and you need a bit of inspiration, how do you get your creative juices flowing?
Some of my best ideas come at the most random of times. I seem to get ideas when I am travelling or even when I’m doing the washing up! But if I am in the office and I have a mental block, it’s good to bounce ideas around from colleagues or just go for a walk.
I like to do the ‘overnight test’ where you sleep on an idea and come back to it another time with fresh eyes and a new perspective.
Have you ever worked all night to reach a deadline?
Never all night, but I have jumped in a taxi to go home at 1am!
Outside of work, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I spend most of my time with my family; I have two kids so they keep me busy.
Where’s your favourite place in Ashford to visit?
Ashford has a great mix of restaurants and bars which I enjoy visiting, especially Everest Inn and Pizza Express.
What’s your favourite phrase or motto?
That’s a really hard question! I would have to say, ‘Well the world needs ditch diggers too!’ because it makes me laugh. It’s from a film called Caddy Shack.
If you could be a superhero, what powers would you have?
Flying, telepathy – basically everything the Green Lantern has!
