As the weather gets colder and the calendar ticks over towards our favourite festive period, you’ll be mad to miss the seasonal offerings at this month’s Ashford Farmers’ Market.

October marks the beginning of game season, pumpkins of course are a popular pick at this time of year, but don’t forget those other hearty root vegetables too.

Beetroot and wild mushrooms are another great option for this time of year, as well as fennel and figs, apples and aubergines.

If you’re picking out pumpkins for Halloween, don’t forget there’s lots you can do with the pumpkin flesh too. Rather than let it go to waste, remember that pumpkin goes beautifully with spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves. You could try cutting any left over pumpkins in to thick slices for roasting or toss the flesh into a food processor for a homemade pumpkin puree.

Meats to look out for this month include beef, duck and lamb, pheasant, rabbit and turkey.
