The underpass near Ashford Station is being transformed thanks to a Network Rail regeneration initiative with Ashford Council, artist Lionel Stanhope and local secondary school pupils.

The passage forms part of the journey pedestrians take to connect them to the Designer Outlet.

The underpass is used by many Ashford residents, and the improvements will make it a much safer, more attractive way to connect key areas of the town.

The project is part of a series of murals which will create an attractive underpass that improves passenger experience and showcases Ashford as a destination.

Network Rail commissioned artist, Lionel Stanhope, will paint a series of murals on the underpass walls and entrance, in his signature style. The first, due to be completed at end of March, is a vintage style railway sign mural.

Pupils from The North School have also been invited to design a mural for a section of the walls. A competition within the school will select a design that celebrates Ashford’s rich history and Lionel Stanhope will then recreate that design as a final mural on the walls of the underpass.
